Accessibility Statement
PuzzleJot is dedicated to ensuring digital and printable word puzzles are accessible, comfortable, and welcoming for everyone, including seniors, players with low vision, and individuals who rely on assistive technologies.
- WCAG 2.1 Level AA Target: We continually design, test, and audit our digital interfaces to align with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards.
- Keyboard-First Solving: You can navigate and solve any word search entirely with your keyboard using arrow keys, Enter, and Space without needing a mouse.
- High-Contrast & Scalable Typography: We employ deep slate and rich teal palettes that exceed 4.5:1 text contrast ratios against our soothing, warm-paper background.
- Dedicated Large-Print Formats: Every printable PDF features clean vector typography and includes custom large-letter editions built with 18pt+ text.
2. Visual Design & Contrast Guidelines
We recognize that high screen glare and low contrast can cause eye strain, particularly during extended solving sessions. To ensure comfortable reading:
- Calm, Glare-Free Backgrounds: We replace harsh pure white (#FFFFFF) with a gentle warm-paper tone (#FCFAF5) to reduce photophobia and screen fatigue.
- Enhanced Contrast: Primary text and grid letters are rendered in dark slate (#1B3E4D / #253A49), offering a contrast ratio exceeding 7.2:1, well above the 4.5:1 AA requirement.
- Non-Color-Dependent Indicators: When words are discovered, they are emphasized with strikethrough styling and bounding lines, ensuring players with color vision deficiencies (such as deuteranomaly or protanopia) can easily track progress.
- Generous Touch Targets: All buttons, grid cells, and navigation links have a minimum interactive surface area of 44×44 CSS pixels on mobile and tablet displays.
3. Screen Reader Compatibility & Ongoing Improvements
Traditional two-dimensional word search matrices present unique spatial challenges for non-visual screen readers (such as NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver). We address this through proactive ARIA markup:
- Each grid cell is marked up with semantic coordinates and readable character labels.
- Dynamic game events (e.g., discovering a word or completing a puzzle) announce status updates via an aria-live="polite" region without interrupting speech.
- The target word list is structured as an accessible unordered list, allowing screen reader users to quickly browse and review the words before starting.
- We are actively developing an alternate sequential clue mode for users who prefer auditory solving.
4. Printable PDF & Large-Print Standards
For community centers, memory care facilities, and home solvers who prefer pen-and-paper:
- Vector-Crisp Rendering: Our PDFs are rendered directly with vector outlines, ensuring that letters remain sharp and free of blur when printed on home laser or inkjet printers.
- True Large-Print Layouts: In our dedicated Large Print Collections, letter sizes are scaled up to 18pt–22pt with generous grid cell spacing, adhering to American Printing House for the Blind (APH) readability guidelines.
- Ink-Saving Grayscale: Answer keys and word outlines are formatted to print clearly on standard black-and-white printers without requiring costly color ink.
5. Accessibility Feedback & Assistance
We view accessibility as an ongoing journey of continuous refinement. If you encounter any barriers while navigating PuzzleJot, find an element that does not work with your assistive device, or have suggestions for improvement, we want to hear from you.
